Conferences and Workshops
2012-01-30 - 2012-02-01
Kingston, Canada

Endorsed by the International Arctic Science Committee, this workshop is the first in a planned series of meetings that aim to collectively shape and coordinate initiatives for research that directly addresses the needs of stakeholders who are affected by change or who are addressing arctic environmental change. The long-term objective is to enable local people, the arctic nations and the wider global community, including the scientific community, to better respond to a changing Arctic. This workshop is a pre-IPY 2012 Conference event. It is intended to develop a science plan that will feed into and further evolve at the IPY 2012 Conference "From Knowledge to Action".

This meeting is co-sponsored by International Study of Arctic Change (ISAC) and the School of Policy Studies at Queen's University.

potential of traditional and renewable energy resources in the North.

Arctic Frontiers is composed of a policy section and a scientific section. This call for papers addresses only the scientific section, scheduled 25-27 January 2012. Organizers welcome abstract submission for both oral and poster presentations to one of these four parallel science sessions:

  • Arctic Geology, Hydrocarbon Reservoirs, and Gas Hydrates;
  • Technological Development and Environmental challenges;
  • Social, Political, and Economic Aspects of Energy Projects in the High North; and
  • Renewable and Alternative Energy

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the University of California at Irvine announces the release of the Ice Sheet System Model (ISSM, http://issm.jpl.nasa.gov), an ice sheet modeling software. To coincide with its release, the ISSM team is organizing a workshop at JPL in Pasadena, California on 12-13 December 2011, right after the AGU 2011 Fall Meeting.

The workshop will feature science talks centered on the capabilities of ISSM, such as inverse methods, higher-order modeling, and parallel computing; as well as classes and tutorials for beginners/users/power users and developers who are interested in learning modeling using ISSM. The goal of the workshop is to introduce potential users and/or developers to ISSM, and foster deeper integration of ice sheet modeling and observations within the cryospheric community.

The software was developed in the last 5 years with funding from JPL Research and Technology Development; the NASA Cryospheric and Modeling, Analysis, and Prediction (MAP) programs; and more recently the NSF Eager program. It will be released in the public domain under an open source license.

The sixth Airships to the Arctic conference explores the forward and backward linkages of the emerging airship industry. The introduction of transport airship will require new locations for transshipment and generate economic opportunities that do not exist today. Just as these other modes of transport spawned an array of input suppliers, this conference examines the supply base of the airship industry. Construction of large transport airships will create the need for materials, engines, pilots, avionics and many other large and small input suppliers.
