Boulder, Colorado

We are pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 24th Polar Libraries Colloquy in Boulder, Colorado.

The conference theme is Cold Regions: Pivot Points, Focal Points. Scientists, economists, and governments are focused on the evolving role of polar regions in world affairs. Polar libraries are evolving as well. What changes have you noticed in your collections, focus, or administration as global attention pivots on the poles? The Colloquy will feature a number of interesting presentations and panels, an experiment with an “unconference” session to address practical problems in polar libraries, and a field trip to one of the coldest labs in the world.

The Eastern Snow Conference (ESC) is a joint Canadian/U.S. organization founded in the 1940s originally with members from eastern North America. Today, Our members come from the United Kingdom, Japan and Germany, as well as North America. Our current membership includes scientists, engineers, snow surveyors, technicians, professors, students and professionals involved in operations and maintenance.

At its annual meeting, the Eastern Snow Conference brings the research and operations communities to discuss recent work on scientific, engineering and operational issues related to snow and ice.

"The Past, Present, and Future of the Earth's Cryosphere"
2012-06-03 - 2012-06-08
Arkhangelsk, Russia

The Symposium will cover a wide range of glaciological problems focusing on recent changes in the state of the cryosphere and its impacts in different time scales. Each oral presentation will be allowed 20 minutes, including discussion. The program includes poster sessions and time for discussion.

Participants are expected to arrive to Arkhangelsk on Sunday, 3 June. The Symposium sessions will be held on the 4-8 June. A reception will be organized on one of the evenings. Further information about excursions will be available later on our website.

The International Glaciological Society will hold an International Symposium on ‘Seasonal Snow and Ice’ in 2012. The symposium will be held in Lahti, Finland, from 25 May to 1 June 2012.

New technologies have broadened our ability to examine the seasonal ice zone, though large uncertainties about its current state remain. Numerical modelling is advancing but thin ice and seasonal snow covers close to the climatological ice margin remain difficult to model because of their transient nature. Ecological impact studies in the seasonal ice zone have increased over the past ten years, and serve to further highlight the important role seasonal ice has on the many physical, chemical and biological systems of the sub-polar latitudes.

In view of these advancing technologies, modelling improvements and ecological studies, we announce a symposium focussed on the understanding of seasonal snow and ice. The goal of the symposium is to progress further in understanding how seasonal snow and ice is responding to changes in the environment and climate, and what changes can be expected in the future. This meeting seeks to address these problems by bringing together scientists from diverse communities engaged in research on snow, sea ice, freshwater lake and river ice and frozen ground.

Jeju Island, Republic of Korea

Organizers announce that the 18th International Symposium on Polar Sciences will be held in Jeju Island, Republic of Korea on 22-24 May 2012. The conference will be sponsored by the Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI).

The International Symposium on Polar Sciences has been held every year since 1994, and is intended to build better understanding and consensus on the progress and future of polar research programs. The theme of the 2012 symposium is "Milestones in Polar Research Collaboration." The main objective of this event is to examine polar environmental changes observed in the atmosphere, cryosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere. The symposium will also address meteorites in the Antarctica and new technology for polar sciences.

This workshop about PISM will foster the exchange between different groups especially from Europe. The first day is dedicated to oral and poster presentations from all groups. During the second day, key aspects are introduced and afterward these are discussed in parallel group sessions to share experiences and to identify future needs.

Currently we plan to have groups for the following topics:
1) PISM introduction (by Ed Bueler),
2) calving law (by Anders Levermann's group),
3) coupling between ice sheets and earth system model models (N.N), and/or
4) ocean-ice sheet interaction (N.N)

Please indicate your preference during registration or suggest further topics which you consider to be important.
