The objective of this session is to discuss interrelationships in terms of the viability of coastal communities, their vulnerability, and policies and strategies for adaptation to local and global change.
Organizers are soliciting contributions both on physical processes, ecological perspectives, and ecosystem services and on social, economic, and governance aspects, including the following topics:

  • Physical perspectives: High-frequency environmental forcing (atmospheric and oceanographic), sea-level changes, on/offshore permafrost dynamics and gas hydrate stability, sea-ice dynamics, biogeochemical transformations, sediment dynamics, etc.;

  • Ecological perspectives: Ecosystem services and biodiversity, including coastal ecosystems, habitats, species, etc.;

  • Socio-economic perspectives: Socio-economic transformations, including market and non-market sectors; economic wellbeing and local economic impacts; fisheries, hydrocarbon exploitation, marine shipping, and related risks and prospects for coastal communities; community vulnerability and adaptation; governance and institutions, etc.

Confirmed keynote speakers for the session are Mikhail Grigoriev, Permafrost Institute RAS, Yakutsk, Russia; and Rasmus Ole Rasmussen, NordRegion, Stockholm, Sweden. The session will serve as the launch
venue for Arctic Coasts as the new LOICZ research hotspot.

Conferences and Workshops
2011-09-05 - 2011-09-10
Vistula Spit, Russia

The aim of the conference is to promote our understanding of changes in all components of the geosphere-biosphere system and to assess the causes and consequences of these changes for ecosystems and humans. The important focus of the conference will be the strategy to mitigate and adapt to a changing global climate and environment.

The conference is endorsed by the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme and is considered as a preparatory “young scientist” meeting for the major international science conference “Planet Under Pressure 2012: New knowledge towards solutions” organized by the Global Environmental Programs in London in 2012 (www.planetunderpressure2012.net). The best projects presented at the Vistula Spit conference will be selected for the London “Planet Under Pressure 2012” meeting.

English is the conference language for oral presentations and posters. The conference does not provide simultaneous interpretation services.

The Centre for Micromorphology Symposium provides an opportunity for researchers in the micro-scale analysis of sediments and soils to present and discuss their findings in an informal setting. In particular we welcome papers from postgraduate and early career researchers. The symposium this year also celebrates the pioneering work of Professor Jaap van der Meer, who retires in September 2011. This years keynote speaker is Professor John Menzies (Brock University, Canada).

To register for the symposium (deadline 15th August) or to submit a title and abstract for either an oral or poster presentation (deadline 1st August) please contact Dr Simon Carr by e-mail (s.j.carr [at] qmul.ac.uk).

There is no charge for registration, although there will be a limit on the number of delegates, so early registration is encouraged.

Session: Winter Climate Change and Ecosystem Functioning
2011-09-05 - 2011-09-09
Oldenburg, Germany

Organizers of a session entitled "Winter Climate Change and Ecosystem Functioning" announce a call for abstracts. The session will be convened at the 41st Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society of Germany,
Switzerland, and Austria, scheduled for 5-9 September 2011 in Oldenburg, Germany.

The guiding theme of 41st Annual Meeting is ”Ecological Functions, Patterns, Processes”. True to this motto we hope to stimulate scientific discussions circling around the functional responses of species and communities towards environmental changes and effects on ecosystem processes, as well as temporal and spatial components of ecosystem organization that support biodiversity. The meeting aims at representing the full scope of ecological research at the different levels of organization (from genes to landscapes) without neglecting its societal importance. Therefore, a vital discussion on the role of applied ecological research for environmental planning should form a distinct part of the meeting.

The deadline for early registration and submission of papers is 15 May 2011.

Hverageroi, Iceland

The overall objective of the Open Assembly in Hveragerði, Iceland, is to address the impact of dwindling ice - terrestrial as well as ocean bound - on the complex interface of nature and society in all climatic zones of the world, with an emphasis on the Arctic, the Antarctic and the Himalayans. In light of the man-made part of climate change, particularly meaning global warming, and the natural phenomena of ice is gradually becoming a concept of global politics - a common heritage of humankind- affecting societal life in quite dramatic ways on a global scale. This turn in the interrelationship and working of the society/nature interface is the focus of the Assembly.
