The course provides a basic introduction to the dynamics of glaciers and ice sheets with a focus on ice-climate interactions. Topics include: continuum mechanics, kinematics, ice rheology, sliding and hydraulics, numerical modelling, polar meteorology, ice-ocean interaction, ice cores, interaction of ice sheets with the solid earth, glacier fluctuations, etc.

Lectures will be given in the morning and exercises (including computer projects) in the afternoon. An excursion will be organized to nearby glaciers. The course is meant for Ph.D. students that work on a glaciology-related climate project. Some places are available for junior scientists.

The deadline for application to the "Climate Change in the Marine Realm" summer course has been extended to Tuesday, 10 April 2012. The course will be held 10-24 September 2012. It will be convened in two locations, the first week at the Wadden Sea Station in List/Sylt, and the second week at the University of Bremen.

Students will get insight into the role of the ocean in the climate system, and understand the complex connections and interactions within the Earth system through examples of the marine realm. The course is open to students from different disciplines within the natural or
engineering sciences at Master's or early PhD level. Students from around the world are invited to apply; the course will be taught in English.

The four main topics for instruction are as follows:

  • Marine Ecosystems and Climate Change
  • Climate Change and Coastal Seas
  • The Ocean in the Climate System
  • Observing the Ocean

Thanks to the generous funding provided by Stiftung Mercator, stipends for 40 participants are available. The stipends will cover travel, room, and board.

Extended application deadline: Tuesday, 10 April 2012.

Poul Jensen, a doctoral candidate in Space Physics at the Geophysical Institute, created the film after capturing aurora photographs from a number of locales in the Interior. “Aurora Sensations” is a compilation of many of those images set to music in a 30-minute production.

In addition to Jensen’s film, Colleen Hickman, a watercolor artist, will have her work on display at the center.

The Alaska Public Lands Information Center and the Fairbanks Convention & Visitors Bureau are sponsoring the event.

The theme for this symposium is open. It covers a wide variety of topics relating to the Arctic and the Antarctic. These include:

  • Human rights issues, such as autonomy and self-government vs. self-determination, the rights of indigenous peoples to land and natural resources and cultural rights and cultural heritage, indigenous traditional knowledge.
  • Local and national governance issues.
  • Environmental law, climate change, security and environment implications of climate change, protected areas and species.
  • Regulatory, governance and management agreements and arrangements for marine environments, marine mammals, fisheries conservation and other biological/mineral/oil resources.
  • Law of the sea, the retreating sea ice, continental shelf claims.
  • Territorial claims and border disputes on both land and at sea.
  • Peace and security, dispute settlement.
  • Jurisdictional and other issues re the exploration, exploitation and shipping of oil, gas and minerals, bioprospecting.
  • Trade law, potential shipping lines through the north-west and north-east passages, maritime law and transportation law.
Conferences and Workshops
2012-09-05 - 2012-09-06
Aberdeen, Scotland

Research presentations are welcome on all aspects of snow and ice research. We particularly encourage international colleagues who may be planning to visit the UK around this time to join us in Aberdeen and present their work. We will advertise a website nearer the time with all relevant information, and a call for abstracts will be sent out in June.

Aberdeen also hosts the British Science Festival that week so we are planning a glaciologically themed event for the evening of Tuesday 4th September to which all attendees at the IGS BB are invited.

The meeting will start on Wednesday morning and finish by 4pm on Thursday afternoon to allow time for homeward journeys.

Svalbard, Norway

This course is a detailed exploration of the behaviour of calving glaciers, marine ice-streams and ice shelves. Lectures and seminars will focus on recent changes in calving glacier dynamics and front positions, and the theory of key processes including hydrology, basal motion, fracturing and calving. Laboratory work will include practical classes on modelling calving glaciers, and remote sensing of glacier oscillations, velocities, and other key characteristics.

The course is suitable for PhD students and post docs with a background in glaciology or related discipline. Preference will be given to students involved in the SVALI project.

Conferences and Workshops
2012-08-28 - 2012-08-30
Nuuk, Greenland

The conference will provide an opportunity to discuss the immediate past, the present situation, and the prospects for the near future of urbanization in the Arctic. The conference will explore different aspects of urbanization such as:

  • The overarching framework of the urbanization process, such as national and regional policies and arctic geopolitics.
  • The specific drivers and enablers of the urbanization process,
such as demography (for instance change in sex ration, fertility, and migration), megaprojects, industrialization, change of occupation, and the role of education and innovation.
  • The social, cultural and economic implications of the urbanization process, such as differentiated processes of urbanization, centers versus minor settlements, economic dependence versus independence and company towns versus integration of new activities.

Registration for the conference will be done via email. To register, please send your name, title, affiliation, postal and email addresses, telephone number, and any special food preferences to Klaus Georg Hansen (kgh [at] nordregio.se). If you intend to present a paper at the conference, please include the title, author(s), a 300-word abstract, and confirmation that the paper has not previous been published.

Registration emails must be received by by 30 June 2012, and all registrants will be contacted during the first week of July 2012.

Field Training and Schools
2012-08-27 - 2012-09-01
Obergurgl, Austria

The aim of this summer school is to talk and learn about recent developments in microstructural analysis of ice and snow. It is mostly focused on MSc, PhD and also postdocs. Undergraduates are also welcome to apply. Our goal is to get around 35 students together. Over 4 days, lecturers will present various aspects of microstructures of ice and snow, inclusing theory, analysis, experiment and numerical modelling. During a special science and career day, lecturers and participants will talk about their careers, and offer advice on writing applications and proposals. A poster session is devoted to posters of all participants.

University of Alaska, Fairbanks, Alaska

This workshop will be run by Christine M. Hunter (Assistant Professor of Wildlife Ecology, University of Alaska Fairbanks) and Jean-Dominique Lebreton (Director of Research at CNRS, Montpellier, France). The workshop will discuss field population dynamics and matrix population modeling. It is aimed primarily at quantitative ecologists and population biologists--participants are expected to have a general interest in quantitative approaches, familiarity with basic mechanisms in population dynamics (life cycle, fecundity and mortality/survival processes), knowledge of basic calculus, and basic matrix algebra.

The registration fee is $500.00 for general participants, and $250.00 for students. Participation is capped at 25 seats, and will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.
