Conferences and Workshops
2012-06-25 - 2012-06-27
Indianapolis, Indiana

The workshop will bring together a multi-disciplinary group of scientists representing the bio-, cryo-, geo- and atmospheric sciences to investigate the issues that can be addressed by remote field programs. The aim is to exchange ideas about scientific priorities which could be explored from 2-3 possible sites and develop a consensus on the highest priority site that would be the focus of the next round of proposals (in 2013). Another goal is to introduce a new generation of researchers to the possibilities for future scientific investigations in the Transantarctic Mountains.

The first two days will be dedicated to discussion of scientific opportunities culminating in the selection of a single deep field camp site. The third day will focus on helping new investigators understand the logistics system and begin thinking about field plans. A group of logistics specialists will be in attendance to provide assistance.

The International Conference on Permafrost, held every four years, is the premier venue for all research related to permafrost.

The conference will focus on both arctic, antarctic and alpine permafrost research. The theme of the conference is “Resources and Risks in permafrost regions in a changing world” and refers to both the impacts of a changing world on permafrost and the impact of permafrost on a changing world. It also uses the world “resource”, which, in the host university tradition, relates to permafrost as both an industrial and environmental resource. The conference will also host official IPA Executive Committee and Council meetings.

Lectures/Panels/Discussions
2012-06-25
Fairbanks, Alaska

Panelists include Suzanne Bevan, of Swansea University, Erin Pettit of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Ross Powell of Northern Illinois University, and Ian Willis of Cambridge University. Each panel member will give a short overview of their career to date and then there will be a discussion session with the opportunity for all attendees to ask questions of our panelists on all matters pertaining to building a successful career in polar or cryospheric research.

The panel discussion will take place on Monday, 25 June 2012 from 5:30-6:30 PM in the Wood Center Ballroom on the University of Alaska Fairbanks Campus - the main presentation hall for the IGS conference. Attendance is open to anyone attending the meeting, but especially graduate students/postgraduate researchers, post-docs and other early career scientists. Sadly, we don't have a budget for any refreshments during the panel but we will be going for drinks, and possibly dinner, at a venue nearby after the session.

Glaciers and ice sheets are making large contributions to rising sea level, and their mass losses are expected to accelerate in a warming climate. New technologies have broadened our ability to detect and monitor glacier and ice sheet changes, though large uncertainties about the current state of the cryosphere remain. Moreover, predictive models are at present unable to capture many key processes of glacier mass balance and dynamics, many of which are non-linear. How are glaciers and ice sheets responding to recent changes in climate, and what changes can we expect in the future? This meeting seeks to address these problems by bringing together experts in glacier, climate and ocean studies, using in-situ observations, remote sensing and modeling.

Abstract deadline: 1 March 2012

Anchorage, Alaska

The joint IAVCEI-IACS Commission on Volcano-Ice Interactions would like to announce the Third International Conference on Volcano-Ice Interactions on Earth & Other Planets, to be held in Anchorage, Alaska, June 18–22, 2012. We are planning a three-day oral and poster session meeting format followed by two days for field excursions to the Wrangell volcanic field and Cook Inlet volcanoes. The conference precedes the International Glaciological Society symposium on mountain glaciers, ice caps and ice sheets in a warming climate that will be held in Fairbanks the following week from June 25–29.

The purpose of the conference is to bring together scientists with a common interest in volcano-ice interactions and to highlight recent studies and eruptions at snow- and ice-clad volcanoes. We are particularly interested in encouraging students and post-docs to attend and present their research results.

Preliminary Agenda and Session Topics include:
• Recent significant eruptions: Huila 2007-08, Redoubt 2009, Eyjafjallajökull 2010, Grimsvötn 2011, Puyehue-Cordón Caulle 2011
• Generation, transport, erosion, sedimentology and hydraulics of jökulhlaups
• Wet volcanic mass flows associated with eruptions at snow and ice clad volcanoes
• Glacier-volcano dynamics associated with changing glacier ice loads, past –current - future
• Hazards and risks at snow and ice clad volcanoes
• Glacier-volcano interactions during recent eruptive activity at Aleutian arc and Andes volcanoes
• Heat transfer mechanisms during glaciovolcanic events, lava-scale to edifice-scale
• Paleoenvironmental studies of volcano-ice interactions, dating of glacial events and implications for ice sheets
• Planetary volcano-ice interactions

Determining reliably the recent changes of the large continental ice sheets is a major scientific challenge. The results are of great societal importance, especially in terms of global sea level rise. Various satellite missions have provided unique data for monitoring the changing cryosphere, with each measuring technique having different strengths and limitations.

This course will cover fundamentals of space based monitoring of glaciers and ice sheets, such as satellite radar and laser altimetry, satellite gravimetry (GRACE), GPS and SAR interferometry.

FRISP started out as an European forum, but now welcomes any scientist working on ice shelves and related issues. FRISP remains a focus on glaciology, but the scope is extended to include continental shelf oceanography, meteorology, and quaternary paleoclimatology to encourage discussion between these disciplines.

The conference comprises 3 days and welcomes presentations (oral and posters) on all aspects of ice shelf research and ice-ocean interaction, in both hemispheres , including, but not limited to:

-Formation, flow and disintegration of ice shelves;
-Response of ice shelves and tidewater glaciers to past, present and future climate variability;
-Surface and basal mass balance of ice shelves;
-Ice-ocean interaction at the calving front of ice shelves and tidewater glaciers;
-Mass transport across the grounding line;
-Ocean circulation and water mass transformation beneath ice shelves and within pro-glacial fjords;
-Impact of ice shelves on the global ocean;
-Processes controlling the delivery of ocean heat to glaciated coastlines;
-Climate records from on or near current or former ice shelves;
-Iceberg calving, drift, melting, and decay.
