The University of Helsinki invites applications for a professor in Arctic ecosystem research. This full-time position will be located in Helsinki, Finland.

The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent full professorship or a fixed-term associate/assistant professorship (tenure track) depending on qualifications and career stage.

The successful candidate will have undergraduate and graduate teaching and supervision duties in the field of subarctic/Arctic ecosystem science. Research directed towards anthropogenic impacts and atmosphere-biosphere-geosphere interactions and feedbacks are welcome. Candidates with a background in natural sciences who address climate change drivers and/or climate change impacts at whole-ecosystem scale are encouraged to apply.

An appointee to a professorship must hold a doctoral degree and have strong scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, the ability to provide top-level teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations, as well as the documentation of international cooperation in the research field that the appointee represents.

An appointee to an associate/assistant professorship must hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work, and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. Other requirements include the ability and motivation to pursue a scientific career, as demonstrated through publications or otherwise.

Applications, written in English, must include:

  • A curriculum vitae;
  • A report (maximum three pages) on the applicant’s previous research activities and funding, and a plan for how the applicant intends to develop their research and focus their activities in the future;
  • A report (maximum three pages) of experience and merits which are of relevance for the evaluation of teaching skills;
  • A numbered list of publications in English and other works with which the applicant wishes to demonstrate their competence and merits, with five most important publications highlighted with brief explanations.
