The Norwegian Polar Institute invites applications for a postdoctoral position in sea ice and ocean boundary layer physics. This three-year position, with potential for a one-year extension pending funding, will be located in Tromsø, Norway.

The successful candidate will use a combination of data from in situ measurements, buoys, autonomous vehicles, and airborne and/or satellite data to examine the characteristics and role of sea-ice ridges over a full annual cycle. Data from buoys and other instruments will be used to examine atmosphere-ice-ocean interaction.

Participation in the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition is expected, either for one or two legs, each about two months in duration. Results and data are to be published in scientific peer reviewed journals.

Applicants must hold a completed PhD in oceanography, meteorology, (geo)physics, applied mathematics, or other closely related field. A documented completed degree is a prerequisite for employment.

Requirements for this position include:

  • Knowledge of Arctic sea ice processes and oceanography,
  • Strong numerical and programming skills,
  • Experience with analysis of sea ice or ocean data,
  • Experience from field-/cruise work conducted on sea ice using the basic tools and instruments for sea ice and oceanography measurements, and
  • Written and spoken communication skills in English.

Candidates must have published in scientific peer-reviewed journals, and the track record of publications will be evaluated. Experience with organization of field measurements is an asset.

Applications must include a description of relevant qualifications and experience, curriculum vitae, publication list, copies of transcripts, and names of at least three references. Research interests should be described in the cover letter. Do not include copies of articles or other work in the application, but note that it may be requested later in the process.

Applications must be submitted online.
