NSF Announces Institutional Transformation Awards Under "ADVANCE"
(Increasing the Participation and Advancement of Women in Academic
Science and Engineering Careers)

The National Science Foundation (NSF) ADVANCE pilot program provides
award opportunities for both individuals and organizations seeking to
ensure fuller participation and advancement of women faculty in science
and engineering. The NSF has announced the first set of ADVANCE
institutional transformation grants.

These awards will support eight universities in efforts to improve the
climate for women in U.S. academic institutions and to facilitate
women's advancement to the highest ranks of academic leadership through
multi-year grants of $3- to $4-million each. The institutions selected
for the new awards have examined their current policies and practices
and developed plans to pursue new organizational strategies to make
access by women to the senior and leadership ranks of university
faculties a priority. The eight awards are part of a comprehensive
effort undertaken by the foundation to diversify the scientific work
force.

The following institutions will receive ADVANCE Institutional
Transformation awards:

Georgia Institute of Technology;
New Mexico State University;
University of Washington;
University of Puerto Rico, Humacao;
University of Colorado, Boulder;
University of Michigan;
University of Wisconsin, Madison; and University of California, Irvine.
