DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: 20 April 2002

The Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI), Polar Climate Program, invites
applications for a permanent position as research scientist on sea ice
and climate.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful applicant is expected to conduct research associated with
the role of sea ice in the climate system. Emphasis should be put on
large-scale, climate-related physical processes and the modeling of
such, and to a lesser extent on smaller scale properties and mechanics
of sea ice. A close collaboration with the oceanographers in the Polar
Climate Program is expected, especially with ongoing efforts addressing
the connection between arctic sea ice, freshwater fluxes through the
Fram Strait, and deep water formation mechanisms in the Greenland Sea.
As a part of this work, NPI maintains time series on Fram Strait
freshwater fluxes through permanently deployed moorings and annual
cruises to the area. The institute has also established a historical
database on sea ice extent in the Nordic Seas. There is considerable
potential for further research based on these two data sets. The
candidate will have access to supercomputing facilities at the
University of Tromso and will also have excellent opportunities to
participate in cruises and fieldwork.

QUALIFICATIONS
NPI seeks candidates with a strong knowledge of sea ice physics and
behavior, preferably with a record of research accomplishments on the
topic of sea ice and climate. Expertise in one or more of the fields of
numerical modeling, statistical analysis, or remote sensing, is
desirable. Experience of cruises or fieldwork in polar regions and a
well-developed professional network is also an asset. The ideal
candidate will have a strong commitment to collaborative problem
solving, and will complement the existing strengths of the institute in
oceanography, paleoceanography, biology, and glaciology. The applicant
must hold a Ph.D. or possess equivalent experience.

SEND APPLICATIONS
Applications should reach the Norwegian Polar Institute, Polar
Environmental Center, N-9296 Tromso, Norway, before 20 April 2002. They
should include a CV, a list of publications, and details of their
relevant qulifications and experience. They should also give an outline
of the research the candidate would like to undertake as a new research
scientist in the Polar Climate Program at NPI.
