Dear Colleagues,

One of the primary goals of the ERI is to expand international research
and educational cooperation.

To this end, we would like to let you know of a new 14-day professional
short course we are offering this summer in Iceland, titled: Iceland's
Wilderness, Natural Resources and Resource Management. With three days
in Reykjavik and an eleven-day field excursion around Iceland, this
short course will provide participants with a broad-based understanding
of where Iceland stands with regard to natural resources and sustainable
development. Participants will learn about Iceland's geothermal and
hydropower utilization, volcanism, temperate glaciers, fisheries,
forestry and agriculture, growth in ecotourism and much more, with
visits to local industries, museums, and breathtaking natural wonders.
As an added bonus, participants will dine in some of the finest
restaurants in Reykjavik, as well as experience the charm of rural
farmhouse hospitality. Participants will be given the rare opportunity
to swim in a caldera in the middle of the Central Highlands, walk on a
glacier, and visit the puffin cliffs on the famous island of Heimaey. A
boat tour around a glacial lagoon, visits to geothermal fields where the
ground is literally boiling, visits to several hydropower plants, and
visits to the small fishing villages of the magnificent Eastern Fjords
are all included. Run by University faculty and experts in their
specialties, participants will come away from this short course, both
intellectually and culturally enriched. Please visit our web site at
http://www.uhi.hi.is/english for a detailed itinerary of this short
course and information on how to register for it.

Our web site also outlines new programs the ERI has developed to
increase international research and educational exchange, such as:

  1. Professional short course described above, being offered 23 June-6
July, 2002 - NOTE: Registration deadline is 30 April 2002.
  2. A Masters Degree in Environmental Sciences being offered now in the
    English language.
  3. An article describing the Environmental Research Institute and some
of the international, multi-disciplinary research projects we are
    undertaking.

The Environmental Research Institute's new web site is full of
interesting information and photos of Iceland and can be found at:
http://www.uhi.hi.is/english

Also on our web site is a section on the International Center for the
Environment (ICE) that we are now working to establish.

Please don't hesitate to forward this information on to those you know
who may be interested in our programs.

Sincerely,

Dr. Bjorn Gunnarsson
