RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist with identifying and describing vegetation
communities of the Alaskan arctic. This position will be based in
Fairbanks, with most of the work to be done at the UAF. In addition, the
student will participate as a field assistant in a field trip along the
Dalton Highway, which goes from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay. Data
collection would be at a series of plots along the road, in the tundra
north of the Brooks Range. Duties consist of analyzing data collected on
the North Slope and Seward Peninsula of Alaska, including plant species
cover data and environmental variables from study plots (data have
already been entered in computer data files). The student will use
statistical classification software and techniques such as sorted tables
to analyze plant communities, and their distribution with relation to
environmental variables. The student will develop his/her own
independent project, which could include the analysis of the floristic
of frost boil ecosystems, analysis of the vegetation communities in
these ecosystems, or another project of the student's choosing.

QUALIFICATIONS: Valid Driver's License; US Citizen or Permanent
Resident; The Successful Candidate Will Be Required to Provide A Copy of
Their Social Security Card at the Time of Employment. Knowledge of
general ecology or plant ecology, plant taxonomy, and plant community
classification. Skills in vegetation community analysis (we will train
you in some of the techniques and sampling methods we will be using;
however, the successful candidate must be familiar with general
vegetation sampling methods). Ability to accurately collect, record,
organize, and analyze data; collect, record, and organize data;
undertake rigorous physical work and long hours in the field,
occasionally work under adverse weather conditions; work closely with
fellow workers and supervisors as well as work independently; work on a
tedious task until complete.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Current college student or within six months of
graduation, sufficient experience to perform the responsibilities of the
position, work independently, analyze data, field experience including
collect, record, and organize data, plant identification, vegetation
sampling. In addition, student must feel comfortable in the outdoors in
remote locations. Working Hours to be arranged. Job Duration is ten
weeks, approximately from mid-June through end of August 2002.
