The Polar Research Board, which serves as the U.S. National Committee to
the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC), is pleased to
announce availability of funds targeted to support the travel of U.S.
scientists wishing to participate in IASC activities. Travel could be to
the annual IASC meeting, to be held during Arctic Science Summit Week
(31 March to 4 April, 2003) in Kiruna, Sweden, or to working group
meetings or conferences at other times. Information about Arctic Science
Summit Week is available on the IASC web site at:
http://www.iasc.no/
The support is intended to encourage U.S. participation and leadership
in IASC.
HOW TO APPLY
To apply for travel funds for Arctic Science Summit Week, please submit
your application no later than 7 February, 2003. Applications for other
IASC-related activities are welcome at any time but should arrive at
least two months before the event. You must clearly describe the
activity's tie to IASC in your application. This opportunity is open to
any U.S. resident active in arctic research.
To apply for travel funds of up to $1000, please submit the following
information to the Polar Research Board (to Ann Carlisle at
acarlisle [at] nas.edu or fax to 202-334-1477).
- Name and affiliation
- Full contact information (complete address including street address,
city, state, postal code, phone, fax, and email) - Short letter (1 page) describing the meeting you wish to attend,
including the name and purpose of the meeting, dates, name of working
group (if relevant), and your role in the meeting or group - Amount requested and intended use (not more than $1000)
- Social security number
The Polar Research Board will make the ASSW-related awards in late
February and other awards as need arises. Funds will be disbursed as
travel advances prior to your trip. All applicants must supply their
social security number for tax purposes. All travel must be on U.S.
carriers and comply with normal government travel regulations.

The National Academies disburses these funds prior to travel, therefore,
it is the awardees responsibility to report the receipt of these funds
in that year's tax returns. Any unused funds should be returned by
check made out to the National Academy of Sciences and mailed to Ann
Carlisle at the address provided above.
