AWI is offering two postdoctoral positions for physical oceanographers
in the context of an EU funded project (ASOF-N) for three years. The
project is a contribution to the international Arctic/Subarctic Ocean
Fluxes Programme (http://asof.npolar.no/) and will be carried out in
international cooperation. The objectives of ASOF-North are to measure
the fluctuations of the exchanges between the Arctic Ocean and the North
Atlantic through the Fram Strait, to understand their causes and to
estimate their effect on the Arctic Ocean. These tasks require close
connections between numerical modelling and field work at sea. The field
work contains deployment and recovery of moorings in the Fram Strait and
hydrographic sections.
The results of the analysis of model and field data should permit the
design of an optimal set of long term observations with as few
logistical constraints as possible to monitor the transports through the
Fram Strait on decadal time scales. The work will be carried out in
close contact with other scientists and technicians and requires a high
degree of independence and the capability to cooperate in a team.
Minimum qualifications: A Ph.D. degree in Physical Oceanography or
related disciplines. The candidate should be willing to participate in
cruises with research vessels to the Arctic.
