IPSSAS is both an international Ph.D. school and an international
network of researchers centered on the study of Arctic Societies. Its
main objectives are:

  • to promote the study of Arctic societies in the fields of history,
    culture and language
  • to explore new research trends in those fields and to develop
    coordinated and collaborative post-graduate teaching
  • to stimulate international networking and synergy between participating
    scientific institutions
  • to foster partnerships between Arctic societies and participating
    scientific institutions; and
  • to encourage participation of and knowledge sharing with Arctic
    communities in its activities, so as to bring more students from Arctic
    societies to register at the Ph.D. level.

The main activity of IPSSAS is an annual seminar of two week's duration
for Ph.D. students and senior M.A. students. The second IPSSAS seminar
will take place in Iqaluit, from May 26 to June 9, 2003, under the
theme: Building Capacity in Arctic Societies: Dynamics and Shifting
Perspectives. Deadline for registration is March 24.

Registration procedure to the Second IPSSAS Seminar

Students wanting to register to the Second IPSSAS Ph.D. Seminar in
Iqaluit in 2003 are asked to E-mail a proposal to the IPSSAS Secretariat
before March 24, 2003, to the following address:

This proposal should be:

a two-page statement outlining the title, objectives, theoretical
framework, methods and current state of advancement of your project; a
proof of your registration in a Ph.D. graduate program; an up to date
C.V.; a short statement as to how you plan to finance your travel and
pay for your expenses to participate to the Iqaluit seminar.

All enquiries on the IPSSAS Network and Seminary should be sent to the
above E-Mail address.

There is a registration fee of 200$ CAD to the IPSSAS Ph.D. Seminar. As
for the rest, participants are expected to pay for accommodation and
personal expenses. Estimated maximum cost of accommodation (room and
meals) : 80$ CAD per day.
