The U.S. Western Arctic Shelf-Basin Interactions (SBI) Project Office is
pleased to sponsor the 3rd Biennial Shelf-Basin Interactions Pan-Arctic
Meeting to be held in Cadiz, Spain, Nov. 3-6, 2003 entitled "Scaling
Regional Studies of Arctic Shelf-Basin Exchange to a Global
Perspective". The SBI Pan-Arctic meetings are designed to foster
international collaboration on topics relevant to the SBI goal to
investigate the production, transformation, and fate of carbon at the
shelf-slope interface in the Arctic as a prelude to understanding the
impacts of a potential warming of the Arctic (further SBI project
information is available at http://utk-bioweb.bio.utk.edu/sbi.nsf).

The challenge to the 2003 pan-Arctic meeting participants is to
determine what steps are necessary to "scale up" regional Arctic
shelf-basin interaction studies (physical, biochemical and biological)
to the larger pan-Arctic scale evaluation of global ecosystem change. To
this end the 3rd SBI Pan-Arctic Meeting will focus on two sub-themes:
1) a regional comparison of biophysical coupling in Arctic shelf-basin
exchange within a pan-Arctic perspective, and

2) methods for scaling up regional process studies (with their inherent
limited temporal and spatial patterns) to the larger pan-Arctic scale.

The meeting format will include 10-15 invited plenary speakers and 30-35
additional participants. If interested in participating in the meeting,
please email Kim Harmon (kcox2 [at] utk.edu) with your contact information
for developing a listserver for future meeting announcements (draft
agenda, topics, logistical information, partial support request form,
etc). If you have questions, please contact Jackie Grebmeier, Director,
SBI Project Office (jgrebmei [at] utk.edu).
