  1. Research scientist/post. doc.

The Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI), Polar Climate Program, invites
applications for a 2 year position as research scientist/post. doc. in
physical oceanography.

Research
The successful applicant will conduct research on the ocean heat
transport from the Atlantic Ocean into the Nordic Seas. The research
will focus on theoretical studies on processes which are important for
the topographic steering of ocean currents. These processes are
instabilities and mixing associated with topography and other possible
processes driving the near bottom flow. The aim is to increase the
understanding on how climate change may influence the path of the
northward heat transport through the study of processes controlling the
topographic steering of ocean currents.
A close collaboration with the oceanographers in the Polar Climate
Program working on related projects is expected.

Qualifications
NPI seeks candidates with a strong theoretical background. The applicant
must hold a PhD. or possess equivalent experience within physical
oceanography.

The Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI), Polar Climate Program, invites
applications for a 3 year PhD grant in physical oceanography.

Research
The successful applicant will conduct research on the dynamics and
thermodynamics of the Nordic Seas with special focus on the Greenland
Sea gyre. The large-scale currents in the Greenland Sea follow
bathymetric contours encircling the basin. Exchange between the
Greenland Sea and neighboring ocean regions must occur across
topographic contours, and the large scale currents will therefore
contribute little to this. For the deep water formed in the Greenland
Sea to influence other ocean regions, and to balance the surface heat
fluxes within the gyre exchange with the surrounding ocean must take
place. The PhD work will therefore focus on understanding the processes
controlling the exchange with the Greenland Sea and the surroundings.
Simplified process modeling and existing observational data will be used
to study the effect of small scale processes like eddies, Ekman layers
etc. on the buoyancy budget of the Greenland Sea gyre. A close
collaboration with the oceanographers in the Polar Climate Program
working on related projects is expected.

Qualifications
NPI seeks candidates with a master degree in physical oceanography,
meteorology or physics with focus towards fluid mechanics. Candidates
with a strong theoretical interest will be preferred.
