This book presents an analysis of a large and well-preserved sample of
animal bones, which was excavated from "The Farm Beneath the Sand" in
the Norse Western Setttlement in Greenland. A wide range (at least 36
species) of fish, birds and mammals is represented in the material, from
tiny capelin over geese and sheep to huge baleen whales. The analysis
covers the entire period of occupation of the farm, from c. AD
1000-1400, and illustrates how the Norse exploited the wild fauna but
also kept domestic animals, and how the latter adopted to living in the
new environment.
