Dear Colleagues,

The US National Committee (USNC) to the International Polar Year (IPY)
formed last year to gather, summarize, and stimulate discussion on the
proposed IPY in 2007 - 2008. We are pleased to announce a new web site
devoted specifically to the IPY at:

http://us-ipy.org

This web site provides new and expanded material on the IPY, including a
rationale for the IPY, a list the USNC membership, and IPY-related
information for download.

We also are pleased to announce that the International Council for
Science (ICSU) has formerly endorsed the IPY and plans to jointly
organize the next IPY with the World Meteorological Organization. You
can view more information about the IPY Planning Group's submission to
ICSU at:

http://us-ipy.org/downloads.html

In the next month, the USNC will release a short report outlining our
vision for the IPY. In the meantime, we invite you to explore our web
site, and in particular, view the list of community ideas submitted to
ICSU on the downloads page.

In addition to the web page, the USNC has written an editorial that will
appear in the March 5 issue of Science magazine. We appreciate the many
comments we have received from the community, and we encourage your
further input.

Mary Albert
Chair, U.S. National Committee for the International Polar Year
