SESSION DESCRIPTION
This session will focus on the integration and use of Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) within cryospheric research. A GIS provides
means by which spatial and temporal data are acquired (at various
resolutions and projections), maintained, analyzed, and displayed. As
computing capabilities improve, databases increase in quantity and
quality, and contemporary knowledge of the cryospheric sciences continue
to evolve, the integration of a GIS within cryospheric projects has
become increasingly valuable.

Therefore, presentations are sought that illustrate and examine uses of
a GIS in the acquisition, analysis and modeling of glaciers and ice
sheets, seasonal snow, frozen ground, sea ice, and other cryospheric
phenomena. Projects that have used a GIS to model or analyze cryospheric
data are especially welcomed, as are those that focus on merging
numerical modeling and field observations into a GIS for calibration or
verification purposes. This session will provide a forum for discussion
of approaches to database management, as well as techniques for solving
a variety of spatial and temporal problems.
