Opportunity:
Applications from interested and qualified candidates are being accepted
for graduate opportunities at both the M.A. and Ph.D. level for
September 2005. Graduate students will have the opportunity to
participate in ongoing research supervised by Dr. Gordon McBean,
Professor of Geography and Political Science at the University of
Western Ontario. These graduate positions are available through the
Department of Geography, however, accommodations may be made for
students interested in pursuing a degree in Political Science rather
than Geography. Financial support is available for successful
candidates.

Opportunities exist for graduate students to contribute to Dr. McBean's
research project that is part of the larger research network, ArcticNet.
ArcticNet, a recently funded Network of Centres of Excellence, was
established to bring together the best scientists in Canada and abroad
to carry out research in different areas of the Canadian Arctic and
across a spectrum of issues confronting Northerners. ArcticNet is
comprised of four research themes. Theme 4, Adapting to Change in the
Canadian Arctic: Knowledge Transfer, Policies and Strategies, is led by
Dr. Gordon McBean. In addition to being theme leader, Dr. McBean is also
the Lead for Project 4.7 Science to Policy-Makers and People. The focus
of Project 4.7 is to provide directly relevant information to aid policy
and decision makers in the development of policies and strategies for
adapting to a changing Arctic environment.

Qualifications:
Candidates must be able to demonstrate excellent oral and written
communication skills. Knowledge of the Canadian Arctic, governance
systems, and the spectrum of issues confronting individuals,
communities, and governments will be considered an asset. Students must
be able to work effectively as part of a research team as well as
independently.

Application Deadline:
Interested candidates are asked to submit a letter of interest and CV as
soon as possible. Review of these submissions will begin Tuesday, 1
February 2005.
