At the request of Congress, the Polar Research Board (PRB) is forming a
study committee, which will be assigned the task of making
recommendations on the future of the U.S. Coast Guard's polar
icebreakers. The National Research Council (NRC) is seeking nominations
for possible participants to serve on the icebreaker study committee.

This study committee will be asked to assess the role of the Coast
Guard's polar icebreakers in supporting United States operations in the
Antarctic and the Arctic. The evaluation will include outlining
scenarios for continuing those operations and alternative approaches,
and examining the roles of polar icebreakers in programs that support
various national priorities, such as national defense, homeland
security, support of economic activity, law enforcement, search and
rescue, environmental protection, and the conduct of science. The study
also aims at examining potential changes in the role of Coast Guard
icebreakers in the Arctic that may develop due to environmental changes.

Committee members should have exemplary technical expertise relevant to
the assigned study tasks and the ability to work in a diverse,
multidisciplinary group. This study committee will include approximately
15 volunteer members with expertise balanced between the following
relevant fields: Arctic and Antarctic policy and law; geology and
geophysics; oceanography; biology or ecology; atmospheric and climate
science; Antarctic logistics; marine engineering; naval architecture;
national defense operations and policy; maritime shipping industry;
transportation economics; and environmental protection.

Please take a moment to consider potential members for this committee
and provide as much information as possible, including:
- Candidate's name
- Affiliation
- Area of expertise
- A few sentences about why the nominee is appropriate

Please submit nominations by Wednesday, 23 February 2005 to:
