London, United Kingdom

The House of Lords Select Committee on the Arctic will take evidence from academics specializing in climate change and sea ice as it continues its new inquiry. The first set of witnesses the questions will focus on the impact of changing global and local temperatures on the Arctic environment, whether the available data on the subject is robust enough to support informed policy making and what impact changing conditions are having on people, wildlife and economic opportunities in the Arctic region. The second session will cover the short and long term causes of changes to sea ice in the Arctic, what the possible impacts of a decline in Arctic sea ice might be and how far UK research influences policy in the Arctic states.

At 10.40 am evidence will be heard from:

  • Dr Sheldon Bacon, National Oceanography Centre
  • Dr Ed Hawkins, University of Reading
  • Professor Chris Rapley, University College London

At 11.40 am evidence will be heard from:

  • Professor Danny Feltham, University of Reading
  • Professor Andy Shepherd, University of Leeds
  • Professor Peter Wadhams, University of Cambridge

Areas of discussion:

  • With the first set of witnesses the questions will focus on the impact of changing global and local temperatures on the Arctic environment, whether the available data on the subject is robust enough to support informed policy making and what impact changing conditions are having on people, wildlife and economic opportunities in the Arctic region.

  • The second session will cover the short and long term causes of changes to sea ice in the Arctic, what the possible impacts of a decline in Arctic sea ice might be and how far UK research influences policy in the Arctic states.

Alliston, Ontario, Canada

The University of Toronto seeks applicants to the 2014 Connaught Summer Institute in Arctic Science: Atmosphere, Cryosphere, and Climate. This opportunity is intended for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows engaged in Arctic research. The program is offered 14-18 July 2014 and will be held in Alliston, Ontario, Canada.

This institute aims to provide an understanding of the Arctic climate and processes that control it and to establish an interdisciplinary forum in which participants can discuss current challenges and identify emerging research opportunities. Topics will include environmental change in the Arctic, limnology, aerosol-cryosphere-climate interactions, climate modeling, aerosol-radiative forcing, cryospheric processes, Arctic sea ice geophysics and ocean-ice-atmosphere interactions, paleoclimatology, Arctic ocean dynamics, carbon capture and storage, ocean biogeochemistry and carbon cycling in Arctic waters, Arctic atmospheric composition, ozone science, and Inuit history and culture.

Students will participate in professional development activities; engage in a diverse career panel discussion; develop strategies for linking scientific knowledge to public engagement, education, and outreach, and present their own research during a poster session.

Admission to the Summer Institute includes all on-site food and accommodation. A chartered bus will be available to take attendees to and from downtown Toronto. Attendees are responsible for travel between their home institution and Toronto or Alliston.

Application deadline: Friday, 30 May 2014.

Applications, including curriculum vitae and a short letter of support from the applicants supervisor, should be submitted via email (csi-arctic-science [at] atmosp.physics.utoronto.ca).

For further information, please go to the summer school website or contact: Kimberly Strong at csi-arctic-science [at] atmosp.physics.utoronto.ca.

Conferences and Workshops
2014-07-14 - 2014-07-17
The Hague, The Netherlands

The increasing demand for fresh water and the impacts of climate change on water availability and extreme events highlight why water is a current major global concern and is “Trending Now.” The Conference will celebrate 25 years of GEWEX research and set the stage for the next phase of research addressing the World Climate Research Programme Grand Challenges on water resources, extremes, and climate sensitivity through observations and data sets, their analyses, process studies, model development and exploitation, applications, technology transfer to operational results, and research capacity development and training for the next generation of scientists.
The Conference will include lead speakers in plenary sessions to provide synthesis and perspective, and an extensive set of parallel sessions to support detailed development of specialist themes. Papers are welcome for all parallel sessions, to be given either as oral presentations or posters.
Abstracts are invited for all topics, including:
(1) the climate system;
(2) land; and
(3) atmosphere.
For topic details, see http://gewex.org/2014conf/program.html.

Abstract Submission and Registration
The abstract deadline is 14 February 2014. Links to abstract submission and conference registration are available at: http://gewex.org/2014conf/home.html. Abstracts will be used to select presentations for poster and oral sessions. Only one abstract may be submitted per registrant. An abstract should have a minimum of 300 words with a maximum of 1000. There is a non-refundable 40 Euro fee for submitting an abstract. Notification of acceptance to authors is mid-March 2014. If you have any problems submitting an abstract or have questions about the Conference, please contact Shannon Macken at conference [at] gewex.org
