The Conference of Parliamentarians of the Arctic Region is a biennial conference for parliamentarians representing the eight Arctic countries and the European Parliament. The first Parliamentary Conference concerning Arctic cooperation was held in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1993. The next conference will be held in the Whitehorse, Canada 9-11 September 2014.

The biennial conference is attended by representatives from the national parliaments of the Arctic states and the European Parliament. The Arctic indigenous peoples are permanent participants to the cooperation. Observers participate from governments and inter-parliamentary organizations as well as from observer states and relevant international organizations.

The Standing Committee of Parliamentarians of the Arctic Region, which is responsible for the work between conferences, started its activities in September 1994. The Standing Committee meets 3-4 times a year in the different Arctic countries to discuss current Arctic issues and the follow-up of the Conference Statement from the latest conference.

One of the main priorities of the Standing Committee was originally to support the establishment of the Arctic Council. Since then the Standing Committee has worked actively to promote the work of the Council and participates in the meetings of the Arctic Council as an observer. Today the Committee is engaged in topics like: shipping possibilities, education and research, human development and climate change.

Fréjus, France

This summer school, which is organized by the french “Groupement de Recherche” on Recrystallization (GDR 3436) address the needs for a better coordination between the different actors in this field and for transmission of knowledge toward young researchers in the field. It will associate researchers and student from different backgrounds, Universities, public research organizations, and private companies.

The aim of this thematic school is to provide a wide overview of :

  • the state-of-the-art in materials sciences (geosciences, glaciology, metallurgy) of recrystallization mechanisms in polycrystalline materials
  • the experimental tools and approaches currently used to observe and characterize recrystallization mechanisms
  • the modelling approaches developed to simulate the occurrence and the effect of recrystallization mechanisms on the mechanical behavior

Please visit the summer school website for more information and to register.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Welcome to the 13th International Circumpolar Remote Sensing Symposium. This conference deals specifically with remote sensing applications in the polar environments, both Arctic and Antarctic. It will provide an international forum for the discussion of work currently being carried out in the circumpolar regions of the world.

The theme of the 13th CRSS symposium in Reykjavík is Polar regions in transformation; climatic change and anthropogenic pressures.

The conference topics are below, and additional topics and/or other Special Sessions can be considered:

  • Environmental monitoring
  • Wildlife management and habitat protection
  • Arctic vegetation
  • Land and water management
  • Land cover and land use change
  • Snow and ice, glaciers
  • Climatology
  • Oceanography
  • Geology, mineral, and oil and gas exploration
  • LiDAR/Radar Imaging
  • Hyperspectral remote sensing
  • Ground, Airborne and Satellite imaging (including Unmanned Aerial Systems)
  • Archaeology
  • Data Integration and Data Modeling
  • Geographic Information System and Web based portals
  • Boreal processes that have direct influence on Arctic processes

This symposium will be of interest to scientists, scholars, and industry and government professionals involved in renewable and non-renewable resource management in both polar environments. The symposium will provide a forum for the exchange of current applied international research, the presentation of new technology, and the advancement of internal co-operation in the circumpolar regions of the world.

This year's symposium is hosted by the Icelandic Organizing Committe.

The Arctic Circle is designed to increase participation in Arctic dialogue and strengthen the international focus on the future of the Arctic. Participating organizations will maintain their full institutional independence, identity and decision-making abilities. To this end, the Arctic Circle aims to create opportunities for everyone to attend different meetings, conduct their own networking and engage in one-on-one informal discussions. Organizations will be able to decide their own agendas and convene their own meetings.

The mission of the Arctic Circle is to facilitate dialogue and build relationships to responsibly address rapid changes in the Arctic. The Arctic Circle will strengthen the decision-making process by bringing together international partners to interact in an open assembly format. This is a new mechanism for existing institutions to reach a global audience in an efficient way.

For more information about the program, please visit the conference website.

Finland-Norway-Iceland

World Trade Center Anchorage will lead a trade mission from Alaska to Finland, Norway and Iceland in September, building on the Arctic Ambitions annual conference held in Anchorage every February. The Trade Mission will visit Northern and Arctic Europe starting September 4th in Finland and ending September 14 in Iceland, with an intermediary stop in Norway. The itinerary includes three days in each country and features visits to Arctic communities. Familiarization with Northern Europe's economies, and in particular commercial development in the Arctic, is the main goal of this trade mission. The participants will gain useful networking opportunities and a wealth of information on these three countries. During the 10-day mission, participants will explore opportunities in Northern Europe, establish useful contacts, and engage in business-to-business meetings.

Sediment Cascades in Cold Climate Geosystems
2014-09-01 - 2014-09-04
Bavaria, Germany

The Eighth SEDIBUD Workshop will be held at the Environmental Research Station (UFS, web: http://www.schneefernerhaus.de/en/home.html ) located close to the highest point of Germany Mount Zugspitze (2962 m above m.s.l., Wetterstein Mountains, Northern Calcareous Alps, Bavaria).

Changes in climate have a major impact on sediment cascades in high-latitude and high-altitude cold environments from high arctic/antarctic and subarctic/subantarctic to alpine and upland sites. Climate changes influence the nature and extent of glaciers, permafrost areas, ice sheets and the extent and intensity of glacial, peri-, pro- and paraglacial processes.
In this context major foci of the workshop are related to:
1. observations of geomorphological processes, measurements and modelling of sediment fluxes and budgets in cold climate geosystems in past, present and future,
2. the discussion of synthesis chapters of the SEDIBUD book.

Expression of interest deadline is March 31st , 2014. Please provide your choices of participation in workshop and excursions and the title of your presentation. A second circular will be sent after March 31, 2014. Abstract, registration and fees deadline will be May 31 , 2014.
