The International Arctic Research Center (IARC) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) invites applications for a Diversity and Inclusivity Coordinator. This full-time, 12-month position will be located in Fairbanks, Alaska, with hybrid work options available within Alaska.
The successful candidate will lead the enhancement of IARC’s Diversity and Inclusivity work to include justice, equity, and access; build on the IARC Diversity and Inclusivity program and initiatives for our staff, researchers, faculty and students; promote diversity, equity, inclusivity, justice, and access efforts with other UAF units; and will serve as the primary liaison between IARC and UAF Department of Equity and Compliance. The Diversity and Inclusivity Coordinator will align IARC’s Diversity and Inclusivity activities with UAF’s Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence, and will support and be a resource for IARC efforts for equitable, ethical, and respectful engagement with historically marginalized groups, and align relationship building with Indigenous Peoples and communities while honoring and including Indigenous Knowledge.
A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, including a proactive disposition toward identifying problems and providing/seeking solutions, are required. A Master’s degree in a relevant field(s) or as a traditional knowledge holder with a focus on Alaska Native Studies, human resources, sciences (including natural and social science), science communication, or social justice, and three years of progressively responsible experience working on Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity, Justice, and Access issues in a higher education and research environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.
Additional skills and knowledge include:
- Excellent listening and relational skills;
- Ability to communicate ideas in both scientific and non-technical language, including good oral and written communication skills and group presentation skills; strong negotiation, facilitation, and consensus-building skills; and ability to be considerate of human factors that are present when discussing sensitive issues;
- Highly self-motivated and self-directed, with an ability to bring enthusiasm and energy to develop programs, inspire others, and foster a collaborative team environment;
- Excellent time management and listening skills;
- Grant writing or fundraising experience and experience with proposal development;
- Strong interest in promoting diversity, equity, inclusivity, access, and justice;
- Ability to exercise good judgment in analyzing situations and making decisions; and
- Working knowledge of Google Workspace Suite and Microsoft Office Suite.
