USPA Technical Training Webinar Series

The U.S. Permafrost Association (USPA) is pleased to announce the USPA Technical Training Webinar Series. The webinars are offered on Zoom. Each webinar is 1 hour long, including a 50-min lecture and 10-min Q&A. Certificate of Professional Development Hours (PDH) will be provided to participants who request it after each webinar. The webinars are free for USPA members, all students, and employees of USPA corporate members. For non-USPA members who are not students, the registration fee is $20 for each webinar. The webinars will be moderated, recorded, and uploaded on the USPA website. Future participants can register and watch the webinar individually and receive PDH. Registration fees for non-USPA members to watch the recorded webinar are the same as in the live webinars.

The USPA webinar series is sponsored by Arctic Foundations, Inc., Shannon & Wilson, PND Engineers, Inc., Geo-Watersheds Scientific, beadedstream, and Katherine Schexneider.

Content of Webinar: Introduction to the use of piles in permafrost to support a variety of foundations. Geotechnical explorations and critical field data to support design will be discussed. Several examples will be presented to show the process of designing piles in warm and cold permafrost, including axial, creep, and lateral considerations. Construction best practices will also be presented along with additional resources.

Brief Introduction of Instructors:

Dr. John Thornley, PE is a geotechnical engineer with WSP USA and has been practicing for nearly 20 years. He has provided design and construction oversight for pile foundation projects across Alaksa. He is a past president of the US Permafrost Association and is the chair of the Structures and Foundations committee of ASCE’s Cold Region Engineering Division.

Andrew Daggett, PE is a geotechnical engineer with WSP USA and has more than ten years of experience. He has extensive design and construction experience with pile foundations across Alaska in frozen and unfrozen conditions.

Free to USPA members, students, and employees of corporate members.

Inspiring Girls Expeditions Alaska is inviting applications for a unique suite of tuition-free backcountry science and art education programs in summer 2024.

The expeditions are open to 16- to 18-year-old high school youths. Alaskans are highly encouraged to apply, and expeditions especially welcome marginalized youths who may have experienced barriers accessing science and outdoor-focused programs. Participants are selected through an application process that focuses on passion for science, art and the outdoors, rather than academic grades or past achievements.

The program is run through the Alaska Climate Adaptation Science Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks International Arctic Research Center, with additional funding from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine Gulf Research Program. Alaska’s 2024 expeditions will include mountaineering on an Alaska Range glacier and sea kayaking in Kachemak Bay. Teams of nine participants spend 12 days exploring glacier terrain or intertidal zones while gaining a greater understanding of ecosystem connections in each of these environments.

Inspiring Girls Expeditions Alaska offers a unique opportunity to explore and understand the landscape through several different lenses. Participants explore these inspiring landscapes under the leadership of an instructor team composed of professional scientists, backcountry guides and artists. Inspiring Girls Expeditions also provides participants with opportunities for post-expedition mentoring and to continue learning through their alumni network.

The last day to submit an application is Jan. 31, 2024. For more information, please visit www.inspiringgirls.org.

Grenoble, France

Storage and release of water from seasonal snow covers constitute critical components of the hydrological cycle in many parts of the world, affecting water availability, vegetation patterns, ecosystems, and weather. Measuring, modeling, and understanding the processes that control deposition and ablation dynamics of snow provide ample
research challenges, especially in complex mountainous terrain.

The 4th International Conference on Snow Hydrology (SnowHydrology2024) will provide an exceptional opportunity to discuss recent advances in all aspects of snow hydrology in a dedicated conference setting, including snow cover processes, distribution dynamics, model development, operational snowmelt forecasting and data assimilation, remote sensing of snow, new experimental method, climate change effects on snow water resources, snow-vegetation interactions, and snow ecohydrology. SnowHydrology2024 is the event to meet your international peers and exchange latest ideas in a focused and informal setting. SnowHydrology2024 will be hosted in Grenoble, France, in the foothills of the Alps not far from the famous Mont-Blanc.

Submission of abstracts will be open from 15 September to 15 October 2023.

Organizers will solicit abstracts on all aspects of snow hydrology without predefining thematic sessions. A program will be organized into topical blocks based on the received abstracts. SnowHydrology2024 will also include poster sessions to encourage focused research discussions and networking.

The Arctic Frontiers annual conference aims to connect different expertise and perspectives from areas such as policy, science and business. It is an arena for networking and knowledge exchange.

Big Picture sessions are the conference's largest sessions, and an arena for discussing the most pressing issues in the Arctic region. Recurring topics are geopolitics, climate change mitigation and adaptation, energy transition and business and policy related to the ocean.

The science program showcases the most recent research on the Arctic, to enhance collaboration and provide knowledge-based solutions.

Side events provide a deep dive into selected topics. A side event can have different formats, such as a panel discussion, workshop or meeting.

The conference's Open events invite the city of Tromsø to engage in discussions on the future of the Arctic. Open events take place in venues across the city and are in both Norwegian and English languages.

Abstract submission deadline: 25 September 2023.
