The Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Centre (NERSC) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher in sea ice remote sensing. This three-year position will be located in Bergen, Norway.

The project aims to reprocess the Sentinel-1 data archive for deriving Lagrangian sea ice motion and wave-in-ice products.

The primary tasks will include:

  • Algorithm development for satellite Earth observation data processing;
  • Scientific analysis, publication, and presentation of results;
  • Machine learning integration to enhance the performance of data processing techniques;
  • Algorithm optimization for scalability and efficiency in handling large volumes of data;
  • Cloud environment adaptation for facilitating accessibility and wider use; and
  • Participation in preparing applications for research projects.

Qualifications include:

  • PhD or equivalent in applied mathematics, Earth system science, or physics;
  • Expertise in SAR data analysis, understanding of the basic principles, data acquisition techniques, and image processing methods;
  • Experience with application of remote sensing data for geophysical research including cryosphere, ocean, or land domains, and with preparing and publishing scientific papers on these subjects;
  • Proficiency in Python programming language, commonly used in data analysis and manipulation, understanding relevant libraries and frameworks (e.g., GDAL, NumPy, pandas), and experience with object-oriented programming;
  • Competence in deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow; and
  • Fluent in spoken and written English, corresponding to “B2 Upper Intermediate” (see
