The Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science at the University of Maryland (UMD) invites applications for an assistant professor with expertise in large-scale physical oceanography. This full-time, tenure track position will be located in College Park, Maryland.

The successful candidate will have research interests that may include quantifying ocean-atmosphere interactions, the role of oceans in interannual-to-multidecadal climate variability and climate change, or the role of polar oceans in Earth’s climate.

The successful candidate will build an externally funded research program that complements and expands the department’s expertise, and will teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels, mentor undergraduate and graduate (M.S. and PhD) students, and provide intellectual leadership in curriculum improvement and developing advanced courses.

Qualifications include a PhD in a related field; demonstrated research accomplishments of originality and depth with the potential to be a scientific leader in their field; and a strong commitment to the educational mission of the department, including graduate and undergraduate student mentoring.
