The STEM Research Center at Oregon State University (OSU) invites applications for two positions within the Polar Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (Polar STEAM) initiative. The Center is seeking a Polar STEAM Program Manager and a Polar STEAM Outreach and Engagement Lead. Both positions are full-time, 12-month, professional faculty positions and will be located in Corvallis, Oregon.

NSF’s Office of Polar Programs (OPP) in the Directorate for Geosciences (GEO) and the Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR) have awarded funding to Oregon State University to facilitate and manage the Polar STEAM initiative.

The Polar STEAM initiative encompasses and enriches two longstanding efforts:

  • Support for writing and artistic projects specifically designed to increase the public’s understanding and appreciation of the Antarctic and the human endeavors on the southernmost continent, known as the Antarctic Artists and Writers (AAW) program; and
  • Support for educators, both formal and informal, to travel to the Antarctic and Arctic to work collaboratively with researchers, referred to as the Polar Educators program.

The Polar STEAM Program Manager is a new professional position responsible for day-to-day operations of the program. This full-time position will manage and execute daily operations, implement work plans, and track and report on activities and deliverables for the Polar STEAM Program. The Program Manager will coordinate activities with fiscal, outreach, and evaluation personnel, logistics partners, and field operations, and will oversee participant engagement and manage participant application, review, and onboarding processes, and logistical support for field experiences. The Program Manager will also secure and manage external contracts, manage team meetings, maintain consistent communications with participants, and provide direct support to program leadership. This position is planned to begin November 2022.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least five years, OR graduate degree and at least three years, of successful project management and administration experience;
  • Three years of experience serving in a project management role in a large-scale (e.g., $1 million annual budget/expenditures) science, education, or creative arts project, program, or organization;
  • Experience coordinating and meeting the needs of a diverse set of stakeholders and program participants;
  • Experience developing program/organization work plans and monitoring achievement of plan tasks and milestones;
  • Experience developing and monitoring program or organizational budgets;
  • Experience monitoring programmatic health and risk,s and developing strategies to reduce risk and increase program health;
  • Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  • Experience managing and facilitating program or organizational teams;
  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills;
  • Experience using project management and collaborative platforms (e.g., Microsoft Teams, Box, Basecamp, Salesforce, etc.); and
  • Experience serving as manager, coordinator, or on a coordinating committee or leadership team of a national level or large-scale initiative or program.

This position is planned as in-person on the OSU Corvallis Campus housed within the STEM Research Center. Partial remote work agreements are negotiable. Standard working hours may be flexed to account for work/life balance and the needs of a program that includes many participants and partners from across the country and deployed to both the Arctic and Antarctic. The position includes occasional work travel (one to three trips per year including possible international travel).

The Polar STEAM Outreach and Engagement Lead is responsible for recruiting participants, disseminating products, and organizing events developed for the program. This full-time employee will coordinate a team to lead design and implementation of communications, outreach, and engagement elements of the Polar STEAM programs. The successful candidate will foster professional development of participating artists and writers, educators, and scientists through both virtual and in-person workshops, offering continuous in situ support, and serving as a facilitator and guide as participants develop collaborative Polar STEAM products, works of art, tools, and resources for the public. Additionally, this position will coordinate and be the primary manager of Polar STEAM public engagement resources, responsible for the broad dissemination of, and engagement with, those resources. Major areas of leadership include professional development, public engagement with science and art, and program communications.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a field related to STEM/STEAM education, outreach, and communications (e.g., science education, journalism, communications, public relations, education, creative industries, digital communications arts, interdisciplinary science, etc.);
  • Five years of experience with STEM and/or STEAM communications, education, and outreach, especially in: ocean sciences, environmental sciences, biogeochemical sciences, and/or physics;
  • Three years of experience in instructional materials development, planning and implementing educational activities for adults, especially implementing teacher/educator professional development, OR coordinating a multi-faceted education, outreach, and engagement program and/or effort;
  • Experience engaging the public in art and/or science programming using a variety of platforms and venues (e.g., virtual workshops, social media, video content, online modules, etc.);
  • Experience working with K-12 teachers/educators, scientists, and/or artists within educational and training programs or broader impacts activities;
  • Experience developing social media messaging and building social media engagement in multiple communities of interest;
  • Exceptional communications and organizational skills;
  • Demonstrable experience successfully working in and with teams;
  • Demonstrable knowledge and skills required to develop fully accessible public information products and engagement activities; and
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing inclusion, diversity, and equity.
