The Ohio State University Announces
The 2000 Byrd Fellowship Program

The Byrd Polar Research Center of The Ohio State University announces the
2000 Byrd Fellowship Program for post-doctoral researchers. This program was
established through a major gift from the Byrd Foundation in memory of Rear
Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd and Marie Ames Byrd, his wife. This program
provides fellowships at The Ohio State University for postdoctoral
researchers with superior academic backgrounds who are pursuing advanced
research on polar related issues. Post-doctoral fellows must have received
their Ph.D. within five years of selection. Except for fieldwork and other
research activities that require absence from campus, Byrd Fellows are
expected to be in residence at the Byrd Polar Research Center (BPRC) during
the tenure of their fellowship.

Applicants should visit the BPRC web page http://www-bprc.mps.ohio-state.edu
and contact specific members of the Byrd Center in advance of submitting
their application to discuss possible projects and how their proposed
research might complement existing BPRC programs which cover a wide range of
disciplines. This fellowship is limited to research of mutual interest to
both the fellow and his/her Byrd Center mentor. Post-doctoral awards will
be for one and a half years. A stipend of $33,000 per year, and a research
and travel allowance of $3,000 will be provided. Selection of Byrd Fellows
will be made by a committee consisting of the Director of the Byrd Polar
Research Center and members drawn from the University community.

Applications and nominations should be sent to the Byrd Fellowship Committee
and need to be received no later than April 15th, 2000. Each application
should include a statement of general research interests, a description of
the specific research to be conducted during the term of the fellowship, a
curriculum vitae, and three letters of reference. Fellowship appointments
may start on the first day of any month between September 1st, 2000 and
March 1st, 2001.
