New Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) Infrastructure
Supports Researchers in Barrow, Alaska

DGPS at the Barrow Arctic Science Consortium (BASC) Survey grade
(dual-frequency) Differential GPS is now available through BASC at the
UIC-NARL Facility. The Trimble 5700 system consists of a base station at
BASC and a rover system for science survey use. DGPS post-processing
software is available on a dedicated computer, and real-time kinematic
(RTK) capability is available for stakeout surveys in the vicinity of
UIC-NARL, including the Barrow Environmental Observatory. Accuracy is at
the centimeter level.

The system was installed by the University NAVSTAR Consortium (UNAVCO),
which will continue to provide technical support and training to
researchers. Researchers intending to use the system are encouraged to
arrange for system training at UNAVCO prior to heading to Barrow, as
on-site technical support may not be available. For further information

SuomiNet at the Barrow National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/
Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Laboratory (NOAA/CMDL)

The University of Alaska Fairbanks and UNAVCO also have installed a
permanent GPS station at the NOAA/CMDL facility in Barrow for
atmospheric and geodetic applications. This system, part of the UCAR
SuomiNet project, uses dual-frequency GPS for near real-time atmospheric
precipitable water vapor measurements. The GPS antenna is on a stable,
geodetic quality monument. Daily RINEX files will be available from the
UNAVCO data archive.
