The Centre for Earth Observation Science at the University of Manitoba invites applications for two PhD or MS students to investigate the role of freshwater in controlling stratification, surface nutrient stocks, locations of mixing and upwelling, and other coastal habitat characteristics in James Bay and Southern Hudson Bay. These fixed-term positions will be located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
The Centre has two ongoing projects that will provide funding for the successful candidates: (1) NSERC Research Alliance project studying freshwater and carbon cycling across the land-to-ocean aquatic continuum at the coast of the Hudson Bay and James Bay Lowlands (research partnership with Cree communities, NGOs, and Mushkegowuk Council of Chiefs), and (2) Polynyas of the Belcher Islands, which aims to support Inuit in Sanikiluaq, Nunavut, with their marine conservation initiative Qikiqtait (in partnership with the Arctic Eider Society).
The successful candidates will have opportunities to conduct field work and/or may make use of existing datasets collected as a part of the recently completed BaySys (2016-2021) project, two-year James Bay Oceanographic Expedition and Mooring Program (2021-2022), and Eeyou Coastal Habitat (eelgrass) Research Project.
