The University of Washington invites applications for two mooring technician positions, one at a Research Scientist 3 level and the other at a Research Scientist 4 level. These positions will be located in Seattle, Washington.

Responsibilities for the Research Scientist 3 position include:

  • Participate in EcoFOCI Seagoing and Mooring programs (20%) including ensuring that all mooring gear, floats, releases, and other instruments are assembled correctly before deployment; at sea, working closely with the mooring and team lead; and assisting in other sea going operations (e.g., CTD sampling, zooplankton net tows, and other common sea-going operations);
  • Preparation for cruises (50%) including submitting mooring designs for production; ensuring that all needed equipment for EcoFOCI mooring cruises is delivered to and loaded on ships prior to cruises; and preparing and maintaining selected oceanographic instruments (e.g., current meters, oxygen sensors, ice profilers, towed Acrobat, profiling moorings, etc.) in coordination with other members of the field group;
  • Working with other team members to coordinate with other groups whose equipment is attached to EcoFOCI moorings (10%);
  • Vessel evaluation (10%) including contributing to finding and evaluating potential research vessels that may contract with PMEL to recover or deploy moorings and undertake other sea-going oceanographic research activities and participating in contract review boards for contracting private research vessels. This may involve some travel (two to three days); and
  • Group participation (e.g., attend seminars, group meetings, data discussions, contribute to publications, etc.) (10%).

Minimum requirements for the Research Scientist 3 position include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering, however, equivalent experience can be substituted for degree requirement; and
  • Minimum of one to three years of job-related experience.

Additional requirements for the Research Scientist 3 position include:

  • Some experience on ocean going vessels and the ability to perform physical tasks at sea,
  • Ability to work independently,
  • Ability to work effectively within a team and have organizational skills, and
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities for the Research Scientist 4 position include:

  • Participate in EcoFOCI Seagoing and Mooring programs (20%) including communicating with the ship’s captain and crew regarding seagoing activities; ensuring that all mooring gear, floats, releases, and other instruments are assembled correctly before deployment; at sea, function as mooring and team lead; and assisting in other sea going operations (e.g., CTD sampling, zooplankton net tows, and other common sea-going operations);
  • Preparation for cruises (50%) including submitting mooring designs for production; ensuring that all needed equipment for EcoFOCI mooring cruises is delivered to and loaded on ships prior to cruises; and preparing and maintaining selected oceanographic instruments (e.g., current meters, oxygen sensors, ice profilers, towed Acrobat, profiling moorings, etc.) in coordination with other members of the field group;
  • Responsible for coordinating mooring equipment from other groups whose equipment is attached to EcoFOCI moorings (10%);

  • Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering, however, equivalent experience can be substituted for degree requirement; and
  • Three to five years job-related experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Additional requirements for the Research Scientist 4 position include:

  • Experience on ocean going vessels and the ability to perform physical tasks at sea,
  • Experience and knowledge on the deployment and recovery of moorings at sea,
  • Experience in programming instruments,
  • Abililty to work effectively within a team and have organizational skills, and
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.
