The American Geophysical Union (AGU) is accepting abstracts for the AGU Fall Meeting 2022. This hybrid meeting will take place 12-16 December 2022 in Chicago, Illinois and online.

The following sessions are accepting abstracts:

SESSION B059: The Resilience and Vulnerability of Arctic and Boreal Ecosystems to Climate Change
Conveners: Elizabeth Embury Hoy, Michelle C. Mack, Abhishek Chatterjee, and Natalie Boelman

Climate change is unfolding faster in the high northern latitudes than anywhere else on Earth. These changes are impacting ecological processes directly, through warmer temperatures and changing precipitation, and indirectly, though increasing frequency of climate-driven disturbances such as wildfire, outbreaks of pests and pathogens, and permafrost thaw. Although some ecosystems are resistant or resilient to these changes, many are shifting to new states, altering the function of the Arctic-boreal region. This session invites contributions in terrestrial ecology and carbon cycle science that provide conceptual, regional, or global insights into the resilience and vulnerability of the Arctic-boreal region, including its wildlife and ecosystem services, to changing climate. Contributions may address any geographic area of this region. Conveners welcome studies that use in situ, airborne, and satellite remote sensing observations, and models, or some combination thereof, to conceptualize, detect, predict, or forecast the changing function of this region in the earth system.

SESSION OS006: Convergent Research in the Arctic: Addressing Complex Societal Challenges through Action-Oriented Coastal and Ocean Science
Conveners: Matthew L. Druckenmiller, Thomas Ravens, Twila A. Moon, and Pacifica Askitrea Leona Mai Takata-Glushkoff

There are growing demands and approaches for Arctic research that addresses societal needs related to sustained and transformational climate and environmental change, shifting socioeconomic conditions, and Indigenous-led focuses on food security and well-being. Finding a balance between “advancing knowledge through research” and “co-producing action-oriented information and tools” for Arctic communities and decision-makers who are on the frontlines of change is a continual learning process for researchers aiming to make their research responsive to complex societal challenges. This session invites examples of Arctic coastal and ocean research that draw on multiple bodies of knowledge and expertise to address societal needs in the face of warming waters, thawing lands, and shifting ecosystems. This session will, in part, highlight work from initiatives focused on adaptation, stewardship, and well-being, including the National Science Foundation’s Navigating the New Arctic (NNA) program and the U.N. Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

SESSION ED004: Arctic Education & Outreach - Effective Ways of Engaging Diverse Learners in Arctic Science
Conveners: Anne U. Gold, Elena B. Sparrow, Malinda Chase, and Katie Spellman

The changing polar environments have created important scientific and societal concerns in high and lower latitudes. In this session, presenters will share effective approaches, frameworks, and examples of how to promote a broad understanding and awareness of the changing Arctic and the related societal implications. The session will highlight effective strategies to inspire learners in both formal and informal learning contexts as well as communities. Conveners also invite papers on effective ways of community engagement, co-design of educational and outreach activities, and fostering intergenerational or cross-cultural learning through Arctic Indigenous knowledge, science, and observation.
