Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam invites applications for an assistant professor in high-latitude hydrology/biogeochemistry. This tenure-track position will be located in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

The successful candidate will strengthen the high-latitude (Arctic, Boreal) research of the Hydrology and Biogeochemistry group. The University welcomes a candidate with research expertise and experience in the hydrosphere, biosphere, cryosphere, or atmosphere and their interactions, using techniques and applications from the fields of hydrology, biogeochemistry, and/or sedimentology (ranging from e.g., eddy covariance to tracer isotope analyses), ideally with a mixed background in experimental work and modeling.

Position duties include:

  • Carry out creative research by acquiring external funding and publishing results in scientific journals;
  • Build a successful research group and supervise PhD students;
  • Coordinate and teach courses offered in BSc and MSc Earth Science and Hydrology programs (approximately 40% teaching time commitment, 20% in first year);
  • Contribute to development of the teaching curriculum; and
  • Make impact on the field as witnessed by a variety of indicators, for example, invited presentations at (international) meetings, media coverage, and peer recognition.

Requirements include:

  • A PhD degree on a topic relevant to what is outlined in the job description, preferably with some post-PhD research experience (proven by publications);
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate and develop an independent line of research;
  • Experience in teaching (development and/or coordination of courses) in the field of Earth Sciences;
  • A basic teaching qualification (BKO), an equivalent qualification from a university outside the Netherlands, or willingness to obtain such a qualification during the tenure track; and
  • Not a requirement at the date of appointment, it is expected that a C1 level in both Dutch and English will be reached before the end of the tenure track.

The department offers BSc courses in Dutch and MSc courses in English.
