The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (University of Colorado and NOAA Physical Sciences Laboratory) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position to examine interactions between the Arctic atmosphere and sea ice. This full-times position will have an initial term of two years, with the possibility of extension subject to performance and availability of funding, and will be located in Boulder, Colorado.

The research position will focus on the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition, which just completed a full year of observations from within the Arctic sea ice. Specifically, the position targets atmospheric links with the sea ice by examining the surface energy budget, its relation to atmospheric drivers including clouds and precipitation, and the representation of these processes in a coupled model. Applicants should expect to work with large and complex observational data sets and output from a coupled regional model, as well as design targeted model simulations to examine relevant physical processes.

A PhD, earned within the past three years, in a field related to atmospheric science and/or sea-ice physics is required. Applicants should have prior experience working with large data sets and/or using numerical models. The position requires strong teamwork and communication skills, and proficiency in an appropriate programming language (python, Matlab, IDL, etc.).

Applications must include:

  • Resume or curriculum vitae;
  • Cover letter addressed to the Search Committee briefly describing qualifications, professional goals, and specific interest in this position; and
  • List of contact information for three references who will be willing to write a confidential Letter of Recommendation.

Applications will be reviewed as they are received. The position will remain posted until filled.
