The Geophysical Institute and the International Arctic Research Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) invite applications for a postdoctoral researcher in climate variability/dynamics. This full-time position will have two years of funding, with potential for a third year, and will be located in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The successful candidate will be part of a collaboration between Alaska EPSCoR (Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) and the Alaska Climate Adaptation Science Center (AK CASC). The postdoctoral fellow will work on investigating the predictability of summer fire weather conditions using observational data as part of the of the Alaska EPSCoR project. Duties include working with the project team on climate dynamics research, co-production of knowledge, and publishing.

This postdoctoral fellowship provides an opportunity to co-produce actionable science that addresses the growing needs of the Alaska wildland fire management community. The successful candidate will conduct cutting-edge climate variability research relevant to understanding the predictability of summer fire weather in Alaska.

Required skills include:

  • Demonstrated expertise in qualitative methods,
  • Ability to work effectively in diverse settings and with a team,
  • Ability to work independently,
  • Strong organizational skills and reliability,
  • An ability to contribute to scholarly publications,
  • Strong interpersonal communication (oral and written),
  • Climate modeling experience is preferred,
  • Experience in working with large data sets, and
  • Experience in project management.

Required education and experience include a PhD degree in atmospheric or oceanic sciences, climate dynamics, or a related discipline at the time of hiring, and a background in climate data analysis. A strong background in Arctic climate is desirable.
