The Department of Arctic Geophysics at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) is accepting applications for a full-time, two-year position as a postdoctoral/young researcher fellow for a particle precipitation project.

The position relates to a project funded by the Norwegian Research Council and investigates three types of energetic particle precipitation (EPP) to the atmosphere, their duration, intensity, impact area, and energy spectrum. These EPP types are the solar particle events (SPE), pulsating aurora (PsA), and substorms. The work includes characterization of the particle precipitation spectra during substorms and assessment of their effects on the neutral atmosphere in comparison with what is already known about SPE and PsA.

General qualifications include:

  • A completed doctoral degree in space physics or a closely related topic, or have submitted the doctoral thesis for assessment;
  • Good skills in programming, e.g. Python or Matlab;
  • The ability to work independently and in a team;
  • Solid skills in written and oral English;
  • Experience in ground-based instrumentation and Arctic/Antarctic environment will be considered an advantage; and
  • A valid (international) driver’s license will be considered an advantage.

Position specific qualifications include:

  • Knowledge and experience in EPP physics, and their effects in the neutral atmosphere;
  • Knowledge and experience in substorm physics; and
  • Knowledge and experience in EISCAT data analysis.

Applications should be submitted online and include:

  • A letter describing personal research interests and motivation for the announced position;
  • An extensive curriculum vitae, including a full list of publications;
