UiT The Arctic University of Norway invites applications for a PhD position studying change of Arctic coastal benthos of northern Norway and Svalbard. This four-year PhD position will consist of 25% teaching and will be located in Tromsø, Norway.

Based on unique photographic time series of hard-bottom benthos in fjords of northern Norway and Svalbard, the successful candidate will investigate links between coastal benthic community structure function and environmental drivers. Aspects of population dynamics of key biota will also be addressed in light of response time to changes. Comparative work with Greenlandic fjord environments is envisioned.

A Master’s degree or equivalent in biology, marine biology, biological oceanography, marine science, or related area is required. Experience and skills in basic lab, analytical, and statistical methods and a background in marine ecology and/or biological oceanography are also needed. Experience in field sampling and a quantitative background in statistical modeling and multivariate statistics are a benefit. Peer-reviewed publications will also be considered an important asset. Prior work experience in a research team setting is beneficial, as is teaching experience. The successful candidate will be able to work independently yet function well within a team in research and teaching settings. Soft skills are therefore also of importance.
