The Arctic Research Consortium of the U.S. (ARCUS) is seeking a freelance Science Writer/Editor for a three- to six-month contract. ARCUS is a nonprofit consortium of organizations dedicated to Arctic research and education.

The primary focus of the work will be editing contributions to the Witness the Arctic and Witness Community Highlights online publications.

Desired Qualifications

  • Excellent science writing and editing skills;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Experience and familiarity with styles commonly used by ARCUS (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style and Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary);
  • Ability to work effectively as a remote contractor, including use of electronic communications media and tools;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with ARCUS staff and contributors from the Arctic research community; and
  • Knowledge of Arctic research issues is helpful.

Expected Tasks

  • Work with an ARCUS project manager and contributing authors to edit and iterate outside contributions to ARCUS publications;
  • Edit reports, proposals, and web content;
  • Draft summaries, abstracts, and/or promotional text for research activities and events; and
  • Ensure content meets editorial specifications and adheres to standards for quality, graphics, format, and style.

The hourly rate will be $40-60/hour, dependent on experience. The specific scope of work and tasks will be developed with the contractor. The contractor will be required to have a business license and general liability insurance, and use their own equipment and facilities.
