The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) invites applications for two principal ice and ocean scientists. These positions will be located in Cambridge, United Kingdom (U.K.) with the possibility of fieldwork, including in Antarctica.

Up to two strategic open-ended appointments will be made in key areas of ice-sheet and ocean science, including:

  • Ice-sheet modelling, harnessing theory, and computing power to understand the contribution of ice sheets and glaciers to sea-level change;
  • Ice sheet-ocean interaction, delivering innovative observational ocean research on the interaction between changing oceans and ice sheets; and
  • The development and application of cutting-edge imaging technologies (e.g., radar) for the exploration of glaciers and ice sheets.

Duties include:

  • Independently conduct high quality and complex scientific research addressing key questions appropriate to the BAS Mission;
  • Develop and submit high-quality research proposals and secure funding to deliver research;
  • Identify and solve problems associated with individual and team projects;
  • Deliver reports, presentations, and peer-review articles clearly disseminating the results and impact of research;
  • Engage with external partners, and develop collaborative relations with U.K. and overseas researchers and organizations;
  • Assist in defining ongoing scientific strategy for BAS and its Science Teams; and
  • Provide management and mentorship for researchers and science support staff as required.

Essential qualifications include:

  • Oral and written communication skills with proven ability to disseminate research results through high-quality presentations and publications in reports and peer reviewed journals;
  • Computer skills commensurate with research field;
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and ability to lead and work in a team in a matrix-managed environment, and influence senior colleagues and stakeholders;
  • Ability to manage, mentor, and successfully lead scientific researchers and support staff to build high-achieving teams;
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully managing, leading, and mentoring researchers; and
  • Numerical ability commensurate with research field.

Qualifications include a PhD in a relevant field, extensive postdoctoral research experience, and a publication list demonstrating ability to influence the scientific field.
