The International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) invites applications for the Cryosphere Working Group (WG) Secretary. A WG Secretary is expected to serve for at least two years, but is encouraged to stay on for longer given successful performance.

Duties for the WG Secretary include preparation and secretarial support for the WG meetings, tracking of activities’ deliverables, and communication with the WG and the central Secretariat during the year. In terms of time, the commitment averages a couple hours per week, more time during the preparation of the Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW), but less time, for example, during the summer.

IASC Secretaries are required to have strong English-language skills and basic technical proficiency. Attendance at the IASC business meetings during ASSW is a requirement. Upcoming ASSW meetings will convene 27-30 March 2020 in Akureyri, Iceland and 19-21 March 2021 in Lisbon, Portugal.

Seen as professional development, the WG Secretary is an unpaid position, although a candidate’s current supervisor is expected to support their participation in this role. IASC will pay for travel costs to attend WG meetings at ASSW or, if necessary, in conjunction with other meetings. IASC also covers the costs for WG conference calls and other collaboration tools.

Applications must include a curriculum vitae and a short statement of interest. Applications should be submitted via email as one PDF document to IASC Executive Secretary, Allen Pope, at allen.pope [at] iasc.info.
