The Polar Data Forum will be kicked off with a conference that will examine the border between funding, policy needs and data related activities. This event will convene 28-22 November 2019 in Helsinki, Finland.

SESSION: NASA ICESat-2 Polar Applications Discovery

The NASA Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) for Polar Applications Meeting will create a forum to discuss the ICESat-2 mission measurements in the context of practical Polar applications. The meeting will aim to understand current opportunities for effectively using the data in polar policy, regulatory, and management/operational activities (e.g. Polar Code, navigation, re-insurance). The launch of ICESat-2 in September 2018 and initial release of its data products in May 2019 enable access to freely available spatially dense and fine precision global measurements of our earth’s surface elevation. These measurements are advancing knowledge on ice-sheet elevation change, sea ice thickness, and other key observations for the polar region. The focus of this meeting will be to create awareness of the new ICESat-2 science data products and develop new relationships to help move the ICESat-2 science into relevant polar actions and policies.
The half-day session will combine presentations with group brainstorming exercises to introduce participants to the ICESat-2 mission and its observations, as well as services and tools to discover, visualize, and access the new data. Group exercises will encourage participants to think about how the new observations may fill current data gaps to inform decision processes in the Polar Regions and to co-identify decision-making contexts and actors that may benefit from the availability of the new observations.
