Northumbria University invites applications for a PhD position in cryosphere physical geography to study the impact of Arctic snow on soil and sea ice. This full-time, three-year position will be located in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, United Kingdom (U.K.).

The successful candidate will explore ways of removing the limitations of current remote sensing capabilities and accurate retrieval of snow mass through measurements and modelling for future development in snow remote sensing. The successful candidate will develop numerical modelling skills (e.g., using high performance computing), and analyses will feed into international multidisciplinary networks of modelling and monitoring Arctic environmental change.

Requirements for this position include:

  • Master’s degree (preference for Merit or above) or a strong academic record (i.e., 2:1 or equivalent GPA from non-U.K. universities); and
  • Appropriate International English Language Testing System score (at least 6.5), if required.
