The Norwegian Meteorological Institute invites applications for an advisor/senior advisor in stakeholder engagement within the Forecasting Department of the Norwegian Ice Service. This two-year position, with possibility of extension, will be located in Tromsø, Norway.

The Ice Service is responsible for sea ice and iceberg mapping in the European Arctic with a focus on Svalbard, and collaborates actively with national and international partners to implement research results into services that are relevant to society.

Typical duties for this position will include contacting stakeholders and collating feedback on the information needs for the polar regions, analysis and evaluation of stakeholder feedback, and promotion of the project to the wider community.

Required qualifications include:

  • Master’s degree in Earth science, applied mathematics, or a related field;
  • Experience using and applying multivariate statistics and analyses; and
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.

Additional desired qualifications include experience and documented knowledge in applied mathematics/scientific programming in a Linux environment; research background in polar-related studies, particularly sea ice and remote sensing; fluency in Norwegian or a willingness to learn Norwegian; ability to identify scientific approaches that can be utilized for operational applications; and demonstrated ability to proactively seek out opportunities to engage with various groups of stakeholders, end-users, and other relevant parties.
