The Norwegian Ice Service at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute invites applications for a senior information technology (IT) engineer. This full-time, three-year position will be located in Tromsø, Norway.

This position is part of the European Horizon 2020 Extreme Earth (“From Copernicus Big Data to Extreme Earth Analytics”) project to develop sea ice mapping services based on artificial intelligence and cloud-based computing techniques.

The successful candidate will provide systems support for the Ice Service, including management of database systems, supporting processing chains for daily operations and research projects, and development of the geospatial analysis system Bifrost used for processing satellite images and ice chart production.

Required qualifications include:

  • High-level education degree in IT or natural sciences (practical experience may compensate for a lack of formal education);
  • Experience and documented knowledge of information system development in a Linux environment;
  • Ability to understand new technology, tasks, and complex issues;
  • Strong knowledge of scripting languages, such as Python and Bash;
  • Experience working with geospatial analysis software, including QGIS and PostgreSQL in combination with PostGIS; and
  • Proficiency in the English language.

Additional desired qualifications include experience with scientific data formats, metadata management, data publishing and data interoperability; experience in handling, organization, and management of large datasets; experience using tools to automate IT deployment, such as Github/Gitlab, Ansible, or Vagrant; experience with and knowledge of operation of services; knowledge of IT-architecture and reusable services including operational systems and high performance computing; and fluency in Norwegian or willingness to learn Norwegian.
