The University of Zurich invites applications for a PhD position to study tundra energy fluxes under future summer precipitation. This position has up to four years of funding and will be located at the University of Zurich in Zurich, Switzerland.

The project will address the question of how summer precipitation change will affect the surface energy budget in the tundra and its coupling to other components of the system. Results will contribute to a better prediction of land surface feedbacks in the Arctic system.

The position requires tuning of micrometeorological instrumentation and measurements to the experimental setup in the tundra. The work will further involve parameterization of a mechanistic model to simulate energy fluxes of the tundra system.

Candidates must be prepared to spend several weeks each summer under simple living conditions at the field station in the Siberian tundra, running field experiments and handling instruments.

The ideal applicant will have a strong background in natural sciences and a Master’s degree in micrometeorology, climate sciences, environmental sciences, or a closely related field.

Applications should include:

  • An application letter,
  • A curriculum vitae,
  • Transcripts of grades from the Master’s degree, and
  • Names and contact information for two references.

Applications must be submitted as one PDF file to maja.weilenmann [at] ieu.uzh.ch.
