The University of Alaska Anchorage invites applications for the position of Multicultural Postdoctoral Fellow that can provide multicultural perspective to teaching and research within the Department of Health Sciences (DHS) and the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies (ICHS) at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA). This position will begin in August 2018 and will be located in Anchorage, Alaska.

The Multicultural Postdoctoral Fellow will teach one class per semester in either the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences Program or Master of Public Health Program. The Fellow will have the opportunity to work with faculty mentors within DHS and ICHS on one or more ongoing research projects and may also develop his or her own research agenda related to health concerns of Alaska Native people, other minorities, and multicultural populations. The Fellow will participate in departmental activities related to curriculum development, student recruitment, student success, or community outreach, and will mentor students with similar research interests.

Applicants must be prepared to teach health sciences courses in the BSHS program or public health courses in the MPH program.

Research interests should include population health challenges such as behavioral and mental health concerns, chronic disease, trauma, suicide, or other health conditions that show significant disparities across cultural groups in Alaska.

Applicants must have a PhD or other appropriate terminal degree in one of a variety of fields including, but not limited to, behavioral and social sciences, biological and natural sciences, public policy, and public health.

Applicants who are have completed all degree requirements except the dissertation will be considered, however, employment is contingent upon conferral of the PhD before the appointment start date in August 2018.

Applications must include:

  • Cover letter that addresses eligibility requirements and indicate how the applicant demonstrates a commitment to bringing U.S. racial and ethnic diversity perspectives to the department, college, and/or university;
  • Curriculum vitae;
  • A two-page (maximum) description of teaching philosophy, including how the applicant would bring a multicultural perspective to courses taught;
  • A brief description of scholarly interests and planned research to be performed during the Fellowship; and
  • Three letters of recommendation from faculty members familiar with the applicant’s teaching and research qualifications.

Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States at the time of application.
