The Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) at the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center invites applications for two positions, Director of Administrative Operations and Executive Director/Associate Dean for the Sciences. These full-time positions will be located at CUNY in New York, New York.

The Director of Administrative Operations will support the Executive Director in facilitating the day-to-day operations across the ASRC’s scientific and administrative units (e.g. legal, financial, technical, etc.). Based at the ASRC location in Harlem, the incumbent will supervise staff and work closely with the five Initiative Directors and Core Facility managers to provide the necessary assessments and improvements, on an ongoing basis, to ASRC’s infrastructure, communication, facilities, and events management.

Duties include, but are not limited to, conducting regular reviews of business models, budgets, and administrative issues of Core Facilities; coordinating communication between the Initiatives and Cores and various operations in the ASRC, the GC, CUNY Central, and other New York-area institutions as needed; working with colleagues at the Graduate Center and the ASRC to establish and chair operations-related committees as needed; conducting research, analysis, and strategic planning for ASRC initiatives and special projects; and representing the ASRC at meetings with internal colleagues, external colleagues, and stakeholders.

Qualifications for this position include a PhD, experience working in a scientific administration and/or in a scientific operation, knowledge of equipment associated with scientific research, and strong written and verbal communication skills.

The Executive Director/Associate Dean for the Sciences of the ASRC plays a central role in strategic decision-making for the sciences at the ASRC and the Graduate Center (GC), and helps represent the GC’s scientific vision and research to internal and external audiences.

The incumbent will liaise between the scientific enterprises centered in the Graduate Center’s Fifth Avenue building and in the ASRC building. Based at the ASRC in Harlem, s/he will oversee the five Initiatives and develop business plans and goals for the Core Facilities (including e.g. revenue targets, user base, short courses), coordinate the implementation of building-wide goals, and help the Directors and managers develop the ASRC’s distinctive interdisciplinary research agenda. With the assistance of a Director of Administrative Operations, the Executive Director/Associate Dean for the Sciences is responsible for enhancing the internal organization and infrastructure necessary for the continued success and growth of the ASRC.

Duties include, but are not limited to, leading efforts to envision new research activities and to develop new funding opportunities for the ASRC; creating revenue and grants targets; establishing and maintaining relationships with funding agencies and commercial firms; communicating and facilitating priorities, policies, and programs; overseeing outreach programs; supporting and advising the Dean for the Sciences and the Provost on scientific programs and policies; managing the budget and supervising budgetary resources; overseeing activities within the Office of Sponsored Programs; and collaborating with the Initiative Directors and Facility managers to refine the strategic direction of the ASRC, and, once executed, monitoring its progress both directly and via the development of external review panels.

Qualifications for this position include a PhD in the sciences, experience working in a scientific administration, experience conducting scientific research, demonstrated ability to manage human and financial resources, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and strong problem-solving skills.
