The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) invites applications for the position of Chief Scientist of the National Ice Center (NIC). This permanent full-time position will be located in the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS), Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR) in College Park, Maryland.

Duties of this position include:

  • Serve as the Chief Scientist of the NIC;
  • Coordinate end-to-end satellite ocean remote sensing sea ice research/development within the NESDIS in direct support to the NIC.
  • Function as the Senior Scientific Advisor to NIC Director and Deputy Director;
  • Plan and document NOAA's Center for STAR and NIC sea ice science and technology roadmaps and research project plans in support of the STAR mission and transition projects into operations as appropriate.
  • Work with the sea ice and synthetic aperture radar teams, within the NESDIS Satellite Oceanography and Climatology Division, to develop and execute scientific proposals and research, facilitating the transfer of data products from research to operations, ensuring consistency across NOAA line offices, as well as evaluate, test, and publish scientific results.
  • Facilitate collaborations with domestic and international scientific partners on research and products to meet or advance NOAA Arctic Roadmap objectives, and satisfy STAR and NIC mission goals.
