This permanent position will contribute to the University of Tromso's
Arctic Marine System Ecology (AMSE) group's research through research
proposals, method developments, field and/or experimental studies,
scientific collaboration, and publications.

The focus for this position is on marine pelagic primary producers,
their ecology, and functioning in the ecosystem. The successful
candidate will have responsibilities within the development,
structuring, and teaching of university courses in marine botany, with a
focus on algal species, biodiversity, and algal ecology from micro- to
macroalgae. Teaching duties will include supervising and mentoring of
undergraduate and graduate student theses at the bachelor, MSc, and PhD
levels.
Minimum requirements for this position include a Norwegian PhD degree in
marine botany or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as
equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree, or similar qualification.
The successful applicant must have documented competence and interest in
marine algal species, biodiversity, and ecology, including the
determination of primary production. An interest in the role of algae as
primary producers in marine ecosystems is required. Participation in
field research and experimental studies will be an important part of
research and this position is expected to participate in research and/or
teaching ship cruises for several weeks.
Candidates should include documentation of their experience in
field-based and experimental research and teaching, preferably from
northern or polar marine areas. Experience in quantitative methods,
biostatistics, and modeling will be considered favorably. Excellent
written and oral communication skills are a requirement in both English
and Norwegian or a Scandinavian language, with an option of a three-year
learning period for the Norwegian language.
All applicants must include a teaching portfolio documenting their
teaching competence. In exceptional cases, practical teaching skills may
be assessed as being equal to formal teaching qualification.

- Postdoctoral Research Scientist Position

This full-time two-year position, with possible extension pending
funding availability and annual review, will be responsible for analysis
of historical field- and satellite-derived data for model validation
within a project studying the potential control on primary production in
the subarctic Atlantic-Arctic Ocean region by physical transport flows
(advection, export, mixing).

Position start date: 1 July 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The successful candidate will be encouraged to act as lead on some
aspect of the project by selecting one of the project sub-questions as
his/her own. The research will be carried out in collaboration with
ocean color and regional biogeochemical general circulation models for
the subarctic Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean.
Minimal requirements are a PhD in marine science, oceanography, remote
sensing, climate or ecosystem modeling, applied math, or related field.
Preferred qualifications include an ability and interest to work across
biological and physical disciplines as well as strong modeling,
quantitative, and statistical skills. The successful candidate will have
published (or submitted) their dissertation chapters in peer reviewed
journals.
International travel will be required.
